A lack of water in your skin—not oil—causes dryness. Because central heating of homes and other buildings can be very drying to the skin, retaining moisture is especially difficult in winter. Your skin needs moisture to stay smooth and supple.
In cooler climates, especially during winter months when home heating systems are used regularly, dry skin is often a problem. Dry, un-humidified heat draws moisture from the skin, and cold outdoor winter air causes the body to protect itself by drawing blood away from the skin. Xerosis can occur when the skin is not well nourished.
Reversing fissuring and scaling and adding moisture to the skin is the goal of skin therapy. Most important is moisturizing the outer layer of the skin because water provides skin with its flexibility. Creams that can be applied to the affected area to prevent water from evaporating from the skin's surface are emollients. Emollients also smooth over the scaly edges that can flake off and cause intense itching. Emollients should be applied after bathing and frequently throughout the day and at bedtime. One application, especially in the dry winter air, is not enough. Repeat an application of lotion throughout the day. For severely dry skin, apply a moisturizer at bedtime. Moisturizer is what holds the water in.
