The protective layer of oil is washed away from your skin when you spend time in water, any water. When you take a 10 to 20 minute shower or bath, normally oils can be replaced over the course of the day. But if you spend an hour or two in the pool every day, the oil doesn’t get a chance to move to the surface of your skin and form a protective coating. If you shower after your swim and use soap or detergent on your hair and body, your skin is further exacerbated, because the oil is washed away almost as quickly as it gets there.

Skin cells on the surface of your skin begin to lose water and dry up and fall off without their protective coating, causing cracks to form between the cells. The flaky itchy feeling is called Xerosis. Replacing the protective coating with something as quickly as possible is the key to treating Xerosis. While your skin is still warm and slightly damp, use an emollient cream immediately after showering.
