Dermatitis or Eczema

Every year some form of dermatitis affects close to nine million Americans.
 
Eczema sufferers have dry skin that has developed into red, itchy or painful patches that become fissured. Because the skin protects the body against infection, the chance of infection increases if the outer layer of skin (epidermis) becomes cracked or broken.

Below are some tips designed to help control the itching and dryness that typically accompany physician-diagnosed conditions of eczema or dermatitis. Generally the best way to treat the itching of such afflictions at home is to keep dry, patchy skin well-lubricated and moist.

• Beware dehumidified air. When forced-air heat circulates in the home, especially during winter months, dermatitis is aggravated by dry air.

• Take regular lukewarm baths. By avoiding water that's either too hot or too cold, you can reduce the chance of infection and help soften the skin with regular baths in lukewarm water.

• Use an after-bath moisturizer. There’s no need to avoid regular soap in your bath as long as a moisturizer is applied afterwards to keep skin from drying out.
